Michigan State is in the process of getting into the 2016 recruiting class, but that did not stop the Spartans from extending their first offer in the 2017 class Tuesday.
Orchard Lake St. Mary's wide receiver K.J. Hamler was the recipient of the offer and it elicited quite the reaction from his mom.
"My mom called the coaches and they talked to my mom and told her," he said. "My mom was screaming and yelling and smiling. She was happy. I was sitting there smiling."
The 5-foot-8 wide receiver has yet to play a snap of varsity football, so the offer left him speechless as the Spartans joined Toledo as early offers for Hamler.
"It's amazing," he said. "I'm just truly blessed to get this offer right now, especially because I haven't played varsity ball yet and I'm only a freshman.
"It's a big achievement for me. … I guess they saw a good amount of talent in me to give me a scholarship this early and I'm blessed for it."
Hamler camped in East Lansing twice in the past week, taking part in 7 on 7 last Wednesday with his OLSM teammates and being at the Saturday one-day camp, too.
"I think I did very well," he said. "The first day, I think I caught the coaches' eye. The second day, I went also did very well."
Hamler, who said his teammate and MSU commit Tyson Smith is a close friend, now is focused on some team goals coming this season.
"I'm looking forward to playing with my team – I love my team to death – and I love my coaches," he said. "I look forward to making the playoffs and trying to win a championship and playing on varsity."
