Special teams were key to Michigan State’s success last season and a pair of its specialists are in the running to be the best at their positions.
Sophomore kicker Michael Geiger was named to the Lou Groza Award watch list for the nation’s top kicker, while senior punter Mike Sadler was named to the Ray Guy Award watch list for the top punter Wednesday.
Sadler advanced to the semifinals for the Ray Guy award last season, but was cut before the finals. He averaged 42.5 yards per punt, landing 43 percent of his punts inside the 20-yard line and 32 percent inside the 10-yard line and earning first-team All-American honors.
After taking over kicking duties last season during the Spartans’ loss to Notre Dame, Geiger went 15 of 16 – setting Michigan State’s single-season record for accuracy and doing it as a freshman.
