B1GMD Storylines: Emerging players

As Big Ten Media Days near, the Spartans have a few story lines to watch. We look at those. The first: Emerging players, freshmen and leaders.

With Big Ten Media Days coming up, SpartanDigest is taking a look at the five storylines around Michigan State to pay attention to.

First up: Emerging players, freshmen and leaders

At this time of year, more about the fall is starting to become clear. Freshmen are on campus. Players are going through offseason workouts. Everything is starting to come into the picture.

When it comes to leaders, Michigan State’s are pretty evident – and are underclassman heavy.

Most schools are bringing three seniors, but Michigan State is bringing just one as juniors Shilique Calhoun and Connor Cook are attending with safety Kurtis Drummond. For a while, my thoughts on captains have included Calhoun and Drummond, as well as offensive lineman Travis Jackson. Cook is right there as well and as quarterback, appears primed to be a leader as he enters the year as the clear cut starter.

It also is this time of year that we learn which freshman have been generating praise from other players, as well as other players making their names known. Last year, the word was Jon Reschke, Trey Kilgore and Damion Terry were among those impressing. Now, none of the three played last season, but all could be very nice players in the future with Reschke and Terry likely to contribute this season.

Names we might hear in that context this season could include Craig Evans, Malik McDowell, Montae Nicholson and more from the Spartans’ solid 2014 recruiting class.
