With Big Ten Media Days coming up, SpartanDigest is taking a look at the five storylines around Michigan State to pay attention to.
Next up: Position battles and depth chart changes
Upon arriving at last year’s Big Ten Media Days, the depth chart came with a big surprise: Riley Bullough was listed as the No. 1 running back.
While he wound up not playing a whole lot at the position in the fall – eventually playing more fullback and preparing to move back to linebacker – that was a big storyline last year. It also was time to talk more and more about the Andrew Maxwell and Connor Cook quarterback battle.
It is hard to know what might change from the spring depth chart, but one possible spot is right tackle, where Kodi Kieler could have taken the top spot at this point. Right tackle was just one of the position battles going strong in the spring in East Lansing, with the other major ones at cornerback and strong safety.
So, come Monday, we will learn more about where Darian Hicks stands in the race to be the starting cornerback with Darqueze Dennard gone and if R.J. Williamson has the hold on the starting strong safety spot.
Another focus will be on Taiwan Jones’ adjustment to the MIKE linebacker spot and how he has asserted himself.
On top of that, it is a time to find out if new position battles have emerged.
