Indispensable Spartan No. 15

SpartanDigest takes a look at the most indispensable players for Michigan State this season. This list kicks off with a big defensive lineman who is primed to make his impact at last.

Lawrence Thomas

The Details

Height: 6-foot-4

Weight: 309 pounds

Position: Defensive lineman

2013 season

Missed preseason camp and the first half of the season with a back injury. His only statistical contribution was a tackle against Stanford in the Rose Bowl.

Thomas came to Michigan State as a heralded recruit, but has not yet put it all together in East Lansing. He might seem a stretch on this list, but the buzz around him this preseason camp is enough to put him at No. 15. The word is that he is ready to be a starter and ready to be the player he has been expected to be. If that is the case, Thomas is going to be an integral part of the Michigan State defensive line this season. He has bounced around in his career from offense to defense and his biggest contribution to date came as a fullback in 2012, when he showed the type of athlete he can be. Now, it is his chance to shine at defensive tackle as well as the No. 3 defensive end in 2014 as the Spartans look for his presence up front.
