Indispensable Spartan No. 1

SpartanDigest takes a look at the most indispensable players for Michigan State this season. The top of our list is the Spartans' fearsome defensive end with a Batman villain persona to go with his play.

Shilique Calhoun

The Details

Height: 6-foot-5

Weight: 256 pounds

Position: Defensive end

2013 season

To say Calhoun burst on the scene might be an understatement. With three defensive touchdowns in Michigan State’s first two games, he was outscoring the offense for a little while. Eventually, Connor Cook and Co. did surpass Calhoun, but he already had set himself up for quite a season. He was named the Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year, earning all-conference honors and being named to some All-American teams.

Calhoun is one of the lynchpins for the Michigan State defense as he brings a big pass rush presence off the edge. He figures to see even more double teams than last season, so producing the same numbers and levels might be challenging. Paired with Marcus Rush, the duo is as solid a pair of bookends on a defensive line that anyone could hope to have. He was named a captain this season and for good reason, he is as good a presence off the field as he is on the field.
