On The Trail (October 8)

What is the latest on John Kelly's recruitment and could he be a package deal with another player? We take a look at that and more in the latest Michigan State recruiting news.

**Michigan State was the first offer for Oak Park athlete John Kelly and has been a rumored leader on and off for a while. A commitment still has not come, but Scout.com’s Allen Trieu said there is some talk that Kelly and Cass Tech running back and Michigan commit Mike Weber could be a package deal now. Right now, the only way that could happen is if Kelly committed to Michigan State and Weber flipped his commitment.

That would assume that Michigan State has room for both, but with Hubbard (Ohio) running back L.J. Scott committed and a possible running back in Jackson Lumen Christi’s Khari Willis, that would be a heavy load of running backs – and players who could be running backs. Michigan State also could see Kelly playing defensive back or even wide receiver.

On the other hand, Trieu says a possible Michigan offer could be coming for Kelly, in which case a package deal of Weber and Kelly could head for Ann Arbor.

**Tampa Catholic (Fla.) junior defensive end Malik Barrow was on campus for Michigan State’s game against Nebraska. Barrow said the visit “furthered his love” for Michigan State.

A source close to the situation said his family loved the visit and they would feel comfortable having Ron Burton and Pat Narduzzi coach and mentor Malik.

Barrow also holds offers from Ohio State and Mississippi State among others early.

**2016 Cleveland Benedictine wide receiver Justin Layne visited Michigan State this weekend for the Nebraska game and per one source, “he was in love” with the visit. Layne has been on campus multiple times now and holds offers from MSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, Penn State and more.

**2016 Akron (Ohio) St. Vincent St Mary’s athlete Tyrece Speaight was scheduled to visit Michigan State earlier this fall for a game, but did not make it due to family
