With scholarship offers Toledo and Bowling Green currently in hand, Huber Heights (Ohio) Wayne junior defensive back Tobias Gilliam is having a solid season helping the Warriors to a 9-0 record leading in to a regular season finale against 9-0 rival Centerville for a conference championship and seeding in the playoffs.
Saturday Gilliam made a game day visit to Michigan State and came away excited about the experience.
“It was fun going up to Michigan State,” said Gilliam. “I went up with Matt Wilcox and J.T. Dozier and it was a good game. We got a chance to see the new section added to the stadium for recruits and go in and see the trophy they played for against Michigan and talk with the coaches.”
What have the Spartans said about their interest so far?
“I talked with Coach (Harlon) Barnett a little bit and he said he was happy that I came up for the game,” he said. “I also talked with Coach (Curtis) Blackwell and he said I was in their Top Five at my position for my class.
“Michigan State is recruiting me as a safety and I’m happy they are recruiting me as a safety as I’ve added some size and weight.”
For Gilliam his visit allowed him to see some familiar faces and catch up with a close friend.
“I got a chance to talk with Vayante Copeland,” he continued. “Vayante told me to enjoy it all and take it all in but to make sure I talk with people outside of football and get their opinion about a school. I’ve known Vayante for a long time as we played on the same pee wee team together. He’s already gained 15-pounds since he’s been there and Coach Barnett said he’s got excellent ball skills.”
Going forward, Gilliam is hoping he’ll not make many more visits this season.
“We have a big game on Friday and a lot on the line,” he said. “I don’t have any other visits planned right now but might visit somewhere this weekend. However, I’m not sure if I’ll be visiting any other schools this season as we’ve got the playoffs coming up.”
