Dawkins on MSU trip: "I loved it"

2016 Columbus (Ohio) Franklin Heights has connection with a member of Michigan State's staff. He made his first visit to East Lansing on Saturday.

Michigan State linebackers coach Mike Tressel generally is the main recruiter for the Columbus area, but for Seth Dawkins, he has been in contact more with someone else in East Lansing.

Dawkins, a 2016 wide receiver from Columbus (Ohio) Franklin Heights, has been hearing from Michigan State recruiter staffer DeAngelo Smith – and it is a relationship that goes way back.

”My dad coached him at a rec center in Columbus,” Dawkins said. “When he was a kid, my dad coached him when he was a kid, so he knew me when I was a little kid. I didn’t remember him, but he knew me growing up and everything. He and my dad are really close. …

”We are really cool. We just talk about football and how my grades are.”

The 6-foot-2, 190-pound receiver said he talks with Smith a couple times per week, but Saturday provided his first chance to set foot on campus in East Lansing.

“It was a great impression,” he said. “I knew Michigan State was a big school and a great college, but I loved it. …

”There were a lot of people there. It was a good experience. We toured the campus, talked to all the coaches.”

Dawkins said he left impressed by the environment around the Spartans’ game against Ohio State on Saturday – even in a losing effort.

“It was just the fans,” he said. “Even when they were down, they were always cheering. I don’t they don’t hold as many people as Ohio State, but it was just about as loud as Ohio State, so that’s impressive.”

The junior receiver also has visited Ohio State and West Virginia this fall and will visit Cincinnati this Thursday.

While his lone current offer comes from Toledo, he is receiving plenty of interest.

Louisville, Missouri, Cincinnati, Purdue, Pittsburgh and a couple other ones,” he said. “Those are the main ones.”
