Roth still in talks with Michigan State

East Grand Rapids senior quarterback could be in the preferred walk-on mix for Spartans as a second quarterback in the class.

At this point, visiting Michigan State is a familiar experience for Mikey Roth.

The 2015 East Grand Rapids quarterback estimates he has been on campus in East Lansing at least 10 times in the past two or so years.

He was back in town for the Spartans’ win against Rutgers and will be on campus again Thursday.

”I got into the honors college so I am going for an orientation thing there,” Roth said. “I am going to stop by the football building and will be talking with Coach (Curtis) Blackwell.”

The Spartans already have a quarterback commit in the class of 2015 with Phoenix Pinnacle signal caller Brian Lewerke, but the talk with Roth has been about a potential preferred walk-on spot.

”I talked to Coach (Mark) Staten and we are going to schedule an official visit for January,” he said.

Roth said his visit a couple weeks ago was a good time, just as previous trips have been.

“It was a great time, great atmosphere in the stadium,” he said. “The new facility they have for the recruits is just spectacular. Had a great time and talked to a lot of coaches sand saw some guys I haven’t talked to in a while, just hadn’t crossed their paths. I had a good time.”

If nothing comes from Michigan State, Roth has other options still on the table, including an offer from Valparaiso.

”I have been in contact with a number of schools,” he said. “Butler and Brown have been in the school to see me so far. I was talking to a coach from Harvard the other night. I have been having contact with coaches from Illinois State and Western Illinois as well.”
