Snyder brings rapport, recruiting resume

New assistant coach at Michigan State has recruited far and wide, worked with current MSU coaches.

After being let go following his third season at Texas A&M, Mark Snyder was looking at potential landing places with his family.

When he heard Pat Narduzzi was going to be leaving Michigan State, he picked up the phone.

”The second I heard that Pat was leaving to go to Pitt, I actually made the phone call because I felt like it would be a great fit on our end,” Snyder. “Very thankful that Coach Dantonio felt the same way.”

Snyder officially was named the linebackers coach and special teams coordinator at Michigan State on Friday. On Sunday, he was introduced prior to the Spartans’ basketball game against Northwestern – and Shilique Calhoun’s announcement he would be returning for his senior season.

Snyder brings plenty of experience, including experience with other members of the Michigan State coaching staff. He worked with Dantonio and co-offensive coordinator Jim Bollman at Ohio State. With the Buckeyes, linebackers coach Mike Tressel was a graduate assistant with the linebackers – under Snyder – while offensive line coach Mark Staten also was a graduate assistant. Now, all of them will be reunited under the Spartan program – where the current group has had some success.

”Anytime you come in to a program, my hats off to Coach Dantonio and his staff they have done an outstanding job,” Snyder said. “That is what made this job so attractive. You are walking into an established program and I am very excited about that.”

Snyder said he is familiar with the scheme Narduzzi ran at Michigan State, adding it is similar to what Dantonio ran as a coordinator at OSU. He also said his specialty on special teams is blocking kicks.

On the recruiting trail, Snyder should pick up where Narduzzi left off – hitting Ohio and New Jersey, with experience in other areas.

”I cut my teeth in South Florida,” Snyder said. “That is where I spend most of time. Probably the second area for me was the New Jersey, the Burroughs, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Staten Island area. I’ve obviously touched Ohio being from Ohio and Texas and Louisiana.

”Hopefully, I can bring something to the staff recruiting wise.”

But before any of that gets under way, Snyder said his first goal is clear.

”What I learned a long time ago is kids don’t really care how much you know until they know how much you care,” he said. “It is my responsibility and my commission to get these guys to trust me. That will be my first order of business is to do exactly what he said. It will be tough following Pat for sure.”
