Film Study: David Dowell

Taking a look at the film of the recent Michigan State commit from Lakewood (Ohio). St Edwards -- a long, athletic defensive back/wide receiver

Michigan State has had an eye for defensive backs lately on the recruiting trail. They picked up another solid prospect earlier this week in Lakewood (Ohio) St. Edward’s cornerback David Dowell.

Dowell brings a lot to like for Michigan State. Here is a breakdown of his film:

THE GOOD

Dowell is a 6-foot-1 and you see that size on his film. He has the length and the frame to be an imposing corner to match up with. Given that size, he also has the ability to bump and bully wide receivers – which he does well in press-man coverage. He has the look of exactly the type of player that Michigan State wants to have on the edges. He looks comfortable in press coverage and uses his hands well to be physical with the receivers.

In coverage, Dowell has a good first step to drop back in coverage. His backpedal ability is good and he turns his hips well to run with receivers.

In playing the ball, he has good awareness of the ball and is quick to get his hand in to break up the pass. He also is physical in coming up to play the run.

He has the toughness as a wide receiver to make catches anywhere on the field, including over the middle.

THE BAD

He does not have the need at wide receiver to run the most perfect routes, as he generally is open or played in such a way that things come easily. But if he winds up on offense at Michigan State, his route running will needed cleaning up.

In zone coverage, he generally gets the ball in time, but a better thrown ball would have him beat sometimes. At the next level, that will have to be tighter and sharper as the quarterbacks will make those throws.
