Signing Day Capsule: Josh Butler

Michigan State reeled in three prospects from Texas in the class, with Butler as the first commit in a number of years for MSU.

Josh Butler – West Mesquite (Texas) Cornerback

Height, weight: 5-foot-10, 170 pounds

Commitment Date: July 21, 2014

Why Michigan State: "Michigan State, it’s very similar to our style of defense right now that we have, so I’ll be very familiar with the defense. I’ll just have to learn the plays and develop my body more and I'll have a better chance of actually playing and playing many years and being a good player at Michigan State."

The Skinny

Michigan State dipped into another new area to land Butler in the recruiting class. He got the class rolling with three commits from Texas and he made sure to get up to East Lansing for a visit.

This one was very much reason to be excited. He spurned in-state offers from Baylor and Texas A&M as well as many impressive national offers such as Notre Dame.

Like Tyson Smith, he brings a perfect fit in his abilities to cover press at the line. He is coming off an ACL tear suffered during his senior season.

Again like Smith, Butler – if healthy – should get a chance to compete for playing time as a freshman since MSU will be looking for contributors at the cornerback position.
