Signing Day Capsule: Kaleel Gaines

The Frostproof (Fla.) standout plays a handful of positions in high school, brings versatility to the secondary at Michigan State

Kaleel Gaines – Frostproof (Fla.) Safety

Height, weight: 5-foot-11, 175 pounds

Commitment Date: August 4, 2014

Why Michigan State: “They have a great defensive scheme and I love all the coaches. I had a chance to meet the players and they said how good of a place it is and it could be the best decision I could make.”

The Skinny

Michigan State has had a bigger presence in Florida in recent years, but this class featured just Gaines.

But “just Gaines” is no way of looking at him as a player. Gaines is a versatile athlete that lines up at multiple spots on offense and also on defense. He will be a defensive back at Michigan State – at least that is the plan.

He is a hitter at safety and brings instincts that translate to either cornerback or safety. He could be a punishing downhill safety for the Spartans.

It would not be a huge surprise to see him get on the field early in his career, possibly as a true freshman.
