Signing Day Capsule: Tyriq Thompson

Detroit King linebacker is the lone early enrollee of the Michigan State 2015 class and has a shot to contribute as a freshman this season.

Tyriq Thompson – Detroit (Mich.) King Linebacker

Height, weight: 6-foot-1, 220 pounds

Commitment Date: August 6, 2014

The Skinny

Thompson was the lone early enrollee in the 2015 class for Michigan State.

He brings leadership, size and skill to the linebacker corps.

One of the main headlines around Thompson was the fact he was a Michigan legacy, but committed to Michigan State. To focus on that element is to sell him short of his skills and individuality.

Thompson is a big, mobile linebacker that should fit into the STAR role ultimately, but is at his best attacking. He has a ferocious motor and intensity that drives his game.

As an early enrollee, he could take the same path as Chris Frey last season, where he serves as a backup linebacker, while starting on special teams.
