Onwenu familiar with MSU, talks latest visit

Detroit Cass Tech junior defensive tackle was on campus again last weekend

Michael Onwenu is plenty familiar with Michigan State at this point. The Detroit (Mich.) Cass Tech junior has been on campus in East Lansing enough – and has a sister attending the school.

He was back for a visit last weekend and he said the best part was taking in the MSU basketball game against Illinois.

“It was really the basketball game because we were courtside,” Onwenu said. “We were like behind the players. … We sat with the coaches and coach Dantonio was like two rows under me so we were just conversing with the staff the whole game.”

The 6-foot-2, 285-pound defensive tackle came with plenty of his Cass Tech teammates, so they took a tour before the game as they arrived early. He also talked with defensive line coach Ron Burton.

Onwenu already holds offers from Ohio State, Michigan, Miami, NC State and others. Michigan State has not mentioned much about an offer, he said.

”We just talked about getting back down there and getting to know more about Michigan State,” he said.

He does hope the offer comes around eventually, though.

“At this point, I hope it does,” he said. “It if doesn’t, I’m just going to keep rolling on.”

Onwenu does not know when or where his next visits will be. For now, he is just focusing in on offseason workouts.

“The offseason work is just going to be running and getting into better shape and losing weight to be faster,” he said. I already have the strength but I want to be faster.”
