Seniors spark Michigan State over Michigan

Dawson and Trice combine for 55 points in 80-67 win against the Wolverines on Tuesday

Michigan State’s seniors Branden Dawson and Travis Trice had never won at Crisler Center entering Tuesday.

That changed Tuesday night in an 80-67 win against Michigan, which was keyed by the seniors as Dawson and Trice combined for 45 points.

Dawson had a season-high 23 points and 13 rebounds – his eighth double-double in 13 Big Ten games. He finished 10 of 12 from the field.

Trice posted 22 points coming off the bench and hit his first three 3-point attempts. He finished with four 3s and tallied seven assists.

But it was the inside game that Michigan State used to sweep the season series against the Wolverines and get its first win at Crisler Center since 2010. The Spartans had 42 points in the paint and converted 25 of 32 two-point field goals.

Matt Costello and Gavin Schilling combined to go 8 for 8 from the field with 17 points and nine rebounds.

The Spartans broke the game open with a 22-6 run in the first half, which included three 3s from Trice and one each from Bryn Forbes and Tum Tum Nairn.

MSU led 38-23 at the half and withstood a strong second-half run from Michigan, as Muhammad Ali Abdur-Rahkman scored 10 quick points for the Wolverines. Michigan State answered each bucket from Abdur-Rahkman in that run, as Dawson and Schilling each had two buckets to match.

Michigan State now is on a three-game winning streak against its in-state rival.
