The recruiting process is starting to heat up for Cincinnati St. Xavier sophomore offensive lineman Matt Bockhorst. One school of interest, Michigan State, recently hosted the 6-foot-4, 290-pound standout left impressed.
“My visit to Michigan State went very well,” said Bockhorst. “I was able to just talk with Coach (Mark) Staten for about 30-40 minutes before practice and that was big. So far I’ve had the most contact with Coach (Harlon) Barnett but he’s not my position coach. So the conversation with Coach Staten meant a lot to me and showed me that he cares about me and the guys he’s recruiting.”
One thing Bockhorst learned during his time with the Spartans offensive line coach was there are some mutual friends between Coach Staten and his father.
“I found out Coach Staten and my dad has some mutual friends from their college playing days,” he said. “Coach Staten played at Miami Ohio and my dad played at Cincinnati, so it was good to make some connections.”
Another connection on the Spartans for Bockhorst was former Bombers standout Trey Kilgore. But it was what he saw on the field that left a lasting impression.
“It was kind of a rainy day,” he said. “But that didn’t deter the visit at all as they run a very intense and hard hitting practice, which is what you want. If you’re going to play hard you’ve got to practice hard and I’m a firm believer in that.
“So Michigan State is a very strong program and their recent success is off the charts with back-to-back BCS bowl wins.”
