Nick Saban and Kirk Herbstreit talk about the phone calls they received from Michigan State AD Mark Hollis about Mark Dantonio.

Prior to the hiring of Mark Dantonio as head coach of the Michigan State Spartans, athletic director Mark Hollis reached out to many as he knew this hire had to be a home run. The feedback he received was brought up at the final Cotton Bowl press conference Wednesday from two of those he spoke with. Alabama head coach Nick Saban and ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit.

Leading up to Thursday nights Cotton Bowl there has been a lot of talk about the past between Michigan State Spartans head coach Mark Dantonio and Alabama head coach Nick Saban.

The untold story lies in the calls received by Saban and ESPN commentator Kirk Herbstreit from MSU director of athletics Mark Hollis prior to his hiring of the then University of Cincinnati head coach.

Saban had no problem speaking highly about his former assistant coach as he knew Dantonio would bring character and integrity to the Spartans.  And as Saban said, “He sure hasn’t disappointed anybody.”

But there was also another call by Hollis to ESPN football commentator Kirk Herbstreit and when asked, Herbstreit fondly remembered the call.
