The Michigan State Spartans have built their reputation on being a power running team.  Against Alabama in the 80th Cotton Bowl Classic, MSU struggled with a 1.1 yard per carry average and only 29 net rushing yards on 26 attempts.

On the night, Gerald Holmes only received two carries for six yards with the other Spartan backs adding 13 carries for 25 yards.
