Ohio sophomore linebacker Chris Oats talks about his first scholarship offer from Michigan State.

Michigan State has entered the recruiting race for linebacker Chris Oats early in the process. What did the sophomore out of Cincinnati Winton Woods High School say about the Spartans? Spartan Digest has the latest.

Spartan Digest had a chance to watch Cincinnati Winton Woods sophomore linebacker Chris Oats this past season coming away impressed by the 6-foot-4, 210-pound athlete.

Oats has now seen the Michigan State Spartans pull the trigger with his first offer.

“I was offered by Michigan State about two weeks ago,” said Oats.  “I’m talking with Coach (Harlon) Barnett.  They sent me a letter and it said congratulations and that is when I learned I had been offered by them.”

The Spartans got a chance to see Oats early in his development.

“I camped at Michigan State before my freshman year,” he said.  “I’m supposed to go up there sometime soon to visit.  I’m not sure what the date is, but my mom has talked with them about coming up there.  So I have plans to go up there soon.”

The Spartans offer caught Oats off guard.

“It’s my first offer and I was surprised,” he said.  “But it feels good.  I saw Michigan State play at Ohio State this past season.”
