As one of the top prospects in the Midwest, linebacker Pete Werner has seen plenty of schools offer with more coming. Spartan Digest caught up with Werner at the Best of the Midwest Combine for more on his recruiting.
“Currently I have 16 offers,” said Werner. “Right now, I’m just trying to enjoy the process. It’s just weird as you see a different school come in each week. So I’m just trying to enjoy it.”
One school that has yet to offer the 6-foot-3, 210-pound backer is Michigan State. However, both parties have been in contact with an expected visiting coming soon.
“Michigan State is a great school with great facilities and a great program,” he said. “Coach (Mark) Dantonio’s got it going on in that program. Going up there will be cool seeing what they do. I’m looking forward to the visit and very excited.
“They’ve not offered yet, but it would be a big step in recruiting. I feel an offer from them would be like a chain reaction and bring on other big schools. So getting an offer from there would be great. It would be awesome and something I look forward to.”
Werner knows this process is not just about what happens on the field and is planning accordingly.
“Everyone has big dreams about the NFL and that is something I would want to do,” he said. “But everyone wants to do that, but then, they don’t have a backup plan. So I want to attend a great academic school and if I go to the NFL great. If not, you always have that degree to back you up.”
