Spartans set to open camp

More than 100 MSU Spartans will begin their preseason football camp on Wednesday. First-year coach John L. Smith will hold separate workouts for newcomers and veterans.

In a press release fromm the MSU Sports Information Department, Smith said he is anxious to see how much the veterans have learned since spring ball, and at the same time throw all that material at the newcomers.

"The first few days of preseason camp are equally challenging from a mental and physical aspect," Smith said in the statement. "We're anxious to get the veterans back on the practice field and see how much material stuck from spring ball. For the first-year players, the next few days are critical from an evaluation standpoint. We may have to take a look at a few of these newcomers at several positions before making a decision on placement. We not only have to find the proper position for some of these guys but we also have to decide upon the players we think have a chance to contribute right away.

The first combined workout is scheduled for Friday. The Spartans will open the 2003 season against Western Michigan on Aug. 30 at Spartan Stadium.
