“Finally, I’ve been waiting on this one,” said Smith. “Honestly, it has a lot to do with Messiah (deWeaver) as since he came to our school, he’s been rocking the Green and White. So it was last year when they started recruiting me. It took a lot of time, but I was just patiently waiting and they said if I came up I would get one. But they said they couldn’t wait anymore and offered me this week.”
Smith has only made one visit to East Lansing and the plan is to return next month.
“I’ve only been to Michigan State when they played Oregon last season,” he explained. “It was a big game and I really enjoyed it as it was electric in the stadium. Late in the game the whole stadium erupted and everyone was high-fiving each other and it was just a lot of fun to be up there.
“I’m planning to go up in June as I’m doing all my visits in June. This weekend my AAU team is in L.A. to play so it will all be calming down after this week. So I’ll be getting up there in June.”
Once things calm down and Smith hits the camp scene, he’ll quickly get back to the hardwood
In late June, I’ll start having basketball practice starting back up as we’re playing in Australia,” he said. “I’m excited and can’t wait as it’s going to be a fun summer.”
But the football camp circuit also has Smith eager to show those doubting his talents on the gridiron.
“A lot of people think I’m just getting offers because of my size,” he said. “So I can’t wait to get out there and prove everybody wrong as I’ve worked hard to get every scholarship I’ve received so far. So it will be fun as I’m only a sophomore and still learning the game. I’m going to get better.”
One thing Spartan fans can be sure about is the kid they call “Blue” will always have one person in his ear about the Green and White.
“Messiah (deWeaver) has already told me that I know what to do and do it right now,” Smith said with a laugh. “But at the same time he said I need to follow my heart. He’s told me they really want me up there and that is a good thing to hear.”
