The Spartan Digest 2016 Spartan 52 is officially underway as we name the Top 52 Spartans for the upcoming season.

To remember one of the best Michigan State squads, Spartan Digest brings you Spartan 52 for 2016. Why “52”? To remember the 1952 team coached by Clarence Lester “Biggie” Munn that went 9-0 winning a National Championship by being voted No. 1 in both the AP and Coaches’ polls. Munn was also named the AFCA Coach of the Year. So to start our official countdown to the season we announce the 52 most important Spartans for 2016.

#52 Ed Davis

After missing the entire 2015 season due to a torn ACL, Ed Davis has petitioned for a sixth year of eligibility with an answer expected at some point this summer.  For that reason, we list Davis as the #52 Spartan in our 2016 countdown.  However, we also list him far down the list because the Spartans are now extremely deep and talented along all their linebacker positions.

As stated, Davis missed the 2015 season due to him tearing his ACL in preseason camp.  At first the injury had many concerned about what the Spartans would do.  However, others stepped forward and now they have experience.

In 2014 Davis started 12 of 13 games at SAM backer in his first season as a starter.  He posted a career high with 58 tackles earning All-Big Ten honorable mention from coaches and the media.

Davis was set for a big season last year before the injury and is expected to be fully healed and ready to go.  He’ll bring leadership and experience to the field to go with all the depth the Spartans have built.  How could we not list the Detroit (Mich.) Southeastern product when so much was expected out of him last year.
