We continue our countdown of the 52 Michigan State Spartans to watch during the 2016 college football season.

To remember one of the best Michigan State squads, Spartan Digest brings you Spartan 52 for 2016. Why “52”? To remember the 1952 team coached by Clarence Lester “Biggie” Munn that went 9-0 winning a National Championship by being voted No. 1 in both the AP and Coaches’ polls. Munn was also named the AFCA Coach of the Year. So to start our official countdown to the season we announce the 52 most important Spartans for 2016. No. 44 is Drake Martinez.

#44 Drake Martinez

Martinez has intrigued Michigan State Spartans fans since he agreed to become a Spartan with is physical size and athletic ability.  The former Nebraska Cornhusker transferred to Saddleback College and was listed as one of the top junior college prospects by many before heading to East Lansing.  Can he turn potential into on field success?  A move to running back from linebacker may not help him see the field as the depth at both positions is deep.

Missed the first eight games of the season due to injury but played against Nebraska and Maryland on special teams.  Was a linebacker during the 2015 season.

Some way somehow, Martinez will see the field in 2016 in some capacity.  We feel he’ll see more reps on special teams and it will be interesting to see if the move in the spring to running back from linebacker sticks.
