We continue our countdown of the 52 Michigan State Spartans to watch during the 2016 college football season.

To remember one of the best Michigan State squads, Spartan Digest brings you Spartan 52 for 2016. Why “52”? To remember the 1952 team coached by Clarence Lester “Biggie” Munn that went 9-0 winning a National Championship by being voted No. 1 in both the AP and Coaches’ polls. Munn was also named the AFCA Coach of the Year. So to start our official countdown to the season we announce the 52 most important Spartans for 2016.

#40 Robert Bowers

Like others who have made the list, Bowers is at an important position along the defensive line.  The question will be if he’s ready or not.

Bowers watched and continued to work on his overall development.  Provided depth on the edge but nothing to really write home about.

Bowers will be given a chance to provide the Michigan State Spartans defense help on the edge.  Listed behind Evan Jones in the spring, Bowers could see Jamal Lyles make a move over to defense if he and Evan Jones don’t show enough early in camp to keep Lyles at tight end.  However, Bowers makes the list because you have to give him the benefit of the doubt that he’s continued his development and is ready to step forward and provide quality reps.
