The calendar is counting down to the day Sugarcreek (Ohio) Garaway senior offensive lineman Joel Honigford makes his college decision know.
Over the past week, Honigford visited the Michigan State Spartans to get one final look at the Spartans.
“My visit with Michigan State went very well,” said Honigford. “I’ve seen a lot of the campus and all the facilities. I also met with the academic people, but last Friday, it was all about spending time with the guys and coaches.”
Who did Honigford spend the day with?
“I hung out with the Allen brothers and with Cole Chewins,” he said. “Then I spent time with Coach (Mark) Staten and Coach (Mike) Tressel. My parents were with me and it was a good time.”
For Honigford the trip was not about his football future.
“What this visit did for me was give me an opportunity to get around the people I’m going to be around and spend quality time with them while getting away from the football talk and talk about life,” he explained. “It was nice getting to know the guys and meet them and hang out with them for a day. I enjoyed it.”
Where do the Spartans stand at this point in the process?
“I probably have a Top Four right now,” he said. “So three of them have offered me and the other one, I’ll know on Friday. So Michigan State, Michigan, Auburn and then Ohio State tomorrow as I’ll be going to their camp.
“I think by the middle of July at the latest, I should have my decision made.”
So what has made the Spartans one of the top schools for Honigford?
“I’m looking to go into engineering with an agriculture background,” he said. “I know Michigan State was originally an agriculture school, so they have a great program there and I like that a lot.”
