Spartan Digest spoke with Long about the offer.
“Definitely, it was a surprise to be offered by Michigan State,” said Long. “I think they are a great school, Big Ten. We’ve looked at their education and it’s really good. Campus is only four hours away so it’s a perfect fit. Not too far, not too close.”
How did Long learn of his newest offer?
Did he felt leaving campus he’d done enough on the field to catch the coaches attention?
“I called Coach (Mark) Dantonio before one of my school lifts and he told me that I had a great camp experience and had an offer,” he said. “I thought I did really good at the camp and did a good job of listening to the coaches and doing what they said.
“I kind of learned the way they play their defense from the safety position with Coach (Harlon) Barnett and caught on really fast. I tried my best to learn really fast and just follow their instructions and surprise them on the field and just ball out and show what I could do athletically.”
Long and his family left East Lansing impressed with the camp experience, campus and the Spartans coaching staff.
“It was awesome with all the pro players giving instruction on how they do things,” he said. “This was my second visit as I also attended a Junior Day before. My family and I walked around campus on that visit and this time we stayed at the Marriott and was able to walk around and came across a jazz festival. So it was pretty cool.
“Coach Dantonio is a great man and my parents think this too. He’s a church man and you can just tell by the way he talks and way he acts that he’s a good guy. Coach Barnett is also a great guy, funny, good character and good morals.”
As for what Long and his family think of the offer, it sounds like all could be on board with a possible destination to East Lansing.
“My parents are very excited about the offer and feel it could be a good fit,” he said. “This is a very good offer and we’re all excited about it and still looking at everything involved with it.”
