We continue our countdown of the 52 Michigan State Spartans to watch during the 2016 season.

To remember one of the best Michigan State squads, Spartan Digest brings your Spartan 52 for 2016. Why “52”? To remember the 1952 team coached by Clarence Lester “Biggie” Munn that went 9-0 winning a National Championship by being voted No. 1 in both the AP and Coaches’ polls. Munn was also named the AFCA Coach of the Year.

#19 Benny McGowan

McGowan is a serviceable offensive lineman for the Spartans.  He’s capable of playing center or guard at a solid level.  However, he’s not the most athletic offensive lineman to come out of the Spartans program and has some limitations.  This season it will be important for the Ohio native to stay healthy and play higher than his ability.

Was a valuable member of the Spartans offense with the number of injuries across the offensive line.  Earned his first eight starts of his career and played in 14 games.  Started games at right guard and left guard while even taking reps at center.  His biggest moment came during the Spartans 22-play game winning drive against Iowa in the Big Ten Championship Game.

McGowan was listed as a co-starter at left guard during the spring with Brian Allen.  However, we fully feel Allen will be the Spartans starting center.  McGowan must play at a high level as the Spartans retool the offensive line with the loss of three starters.  While he will not be the main focus of the Spartans offensive line, his performance will be key as we feel MSU will look to ramp up their running game.  That fits McGowan’s skill set much better than having to be in pass-pro.
