We continue our countdown of the 52 Michigan State Spartans to watch during the 2016 season.

To remember one of the best Michigan State squads, Spartan Digest brings your Spartan 52 for 2016. Why “52”? To remember the 1952 team coached by Clarence Lester “Biggie” Munn that went 9-0 winning a National Championship by being voted No. 1 in both the AP and Coaches’ polls. Munn was also named the AFCA Coach of the Year.

#16 Montae Nicholson

With all the athletic talent in the world to become one of the top players in college football Nicholson faced some struggles that have some questioning if he should even stay at safety.  With size, speed and solid hands, all the tools are there for stardom.

With 10 starts it might surprise some that Nicholson finished the season ranked third on the Spartans with 83 tackles.  After finding himself in a non-starting role by mid-season, the light went on and fans started to see the player many expected when the season started.

By the time the 2015 season ended many felt Nicholson had turned the corner and entered the spring as a starting safety.  Big things are expected and Nicholson knows there is talent in the wings wanting on the field.  There is no reason year three on the field is not his best with even more big plays ahead of him.
