We continue our countdown of the 52 Michigan State Spartans to watch during the 2016 season.

To remember one of the best Michigan State squads, Spartan Digest brings your Spartan 52 for 2016. Why “52”? To remember the 1952 team coached by Clarence Lester “Biggie” Munn that went 9-0 winning a National Championship by being voted No. 1 in both the AP and Coaches’ polls. Munn was also named the AFCA Coach of the Year.

#15 R.J. Shelton

Each season has seen Shelton expand his role on the Spartans offensive and special teams.  This year he enters with 11 career starts and has played in 40 games during his career.  Often overshadowed by bigger names, Shelton should be expected to have the biggest year of his career.

2015

Recorded his best season since arriving on campus with career highs in receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns.  Was second on the team in receptions and earned honorable mention All-Big Ten from the coaches.

WHY HE MADE THE COUNTDOWN

With the loss of Aaron Burbridge it is time for Shelton to step to the front and deliver the best season of his career.  While not flashy, Shelton has been a reliable performer since arriving on campus but Spartan Digest fully expects Shelton to not only be a big number guy, but also a leader to many young receivers.
