We continue our countdown of the 52 Michigan State Spartans to watch during the 2016 season.

To remember one of the best Michigan State squads, Spartan Digest brings you our Spartan 52 for 2016. Why “52”? to remember the 1952 team coach by Clarence Lester “Biggie” Munn that went 9-0 winning a National Championship by being voted No. 1 in both the AP and Coaches’ polls. Munn was also named AFCA Coach of the Year.

#9 Gerald Holmes

Holmes must stay consistent and keep growing his game.  Often getting loss behind the other backs on the team, Holmes has the tools to be a key player as he can get yards out of the backfield and also come out of the backfield to catch the ball.

Was second on the Spartans in rushing with 540 yards and eight touchdowns.  Holmes also posted ten catches for 92 yards in 13 games.  Earned seven consecutive starts to end the season.

Big things should be expected out of Holmes as he’s the veteran out of the backfield having played in 16 games during his career.  Came on strong late last season giving the Spartans a dependable back as others continue to learn their role.  Will have to battle for reps but has the tools to be a big time performer if given the reps.  Michigan State will be a run first team and Holmes will need to come up big.
