We continue our countdown of the 52 Michigan State Spartans to watch during the 2016 season.

To remember one of the best Michigan State squads, Spartan Digest brings you our Spartan 52 for 2016. Why “52”? to remember the 1952 team coach by Clarence Lester “Biggie” Munn that went 9-0 winning a National Championship by being voted No. 1 in both the AP and Coaches’ polls. Munn was also named AFCA Coach of the Year.

#7 Vayante Copeland

The rising star lost some shine last fall following a neck injury against Oregon with many wondering if his football career was over.  Copeland has all the tools to be the next great Spartan defender and if fully healthy should be expected to show why some feel he’ll be a player to watch in 2016.

2015

Made two starts to open the season before going down against Oregon with a season ending neck injury.  Posted seven tackles and showed great coverage skills with a pass break-up and game -sealing interception in the end zone during the Spartans season opening win over Western Michigan.

WHY HE MADE THE COUNTDOWN

Spartan Digest has covered Copeland since his high school days at Thurgood Marshall in Dayton, Ohio.  We felt he was a super star in the making then and still feel Copeland is a player with great upside if he can stay healthy.  Copeland is one player Spartan fans should be extremely excited to watch this season.
