We continue our countdown of the 52 Michigan State Spartans to watch during the 2016 season.

To remember one of the best Michigan State squads, Spartan Digest brings you our Spartan 52 for 2016. Why “52”? to remember the 1952 team coach by Clarence Lester “Biggie” Munn that went 9-0 winning a National Championship by being voted No. 1 in both the AP and Coaches’ polls. Munn was also named AFCA Coach of the Year.

#4 Malik McDowell

Will this be the last season McDowell wears a Michigan State uniform?  That will be the talk all season long as many expect McDowell to take the next steps to becoming one of the top all-around players in college football.  All the tools are there for greatness and last season the Detroit, Michigan native had everybody talking.

2015

Earned second team All-Big Ten from coaches and media following a season that saw McDowell posted 13 tackles for loss and 41 total tackles ranking second among Spartan defensive linemen.

WHY HE MADE THE COUNTDOWN

Many have McDowell as a Top 10 NFL Draft selection next spring.  However, he first must have his best season as a Spartan.  All the tools are there for McDowell to become a Spartan talked about for years to come and for that reason Spartan Digest has him as one of the Top Four Spartans to watch this season.  Must become the anchor of the Spartans defensive front not only in numbers posted on the field but with leadership.
