Michigan State Madness Could Be a Magical Night For Tom Izzo & Spartan Basketball’s Future

East Lansing, MI

As Tom Izzo and three of his key Spartans boarded a plan to return for tonight’s Michigan State Madness event to kick off the season, the head coach’s eyes were fixed on the future.  No not the new season that has already started practicing, the long term future.

2017 recruiting commitments Jaren Jackson and Xavier Tillman will be in the house, but so will a host of other nationally coveted and sought after top players that Izzo and his staff are wooing to be the next great Spartan star.  The event has grown into a national event for the country to see what costume Izzo will wear next, but more importantly it is a time to show off the program to the nation’s best ballers.  With Tillman and Jackson working on this potential crop of stars, who knows how good tonight can be for the future.

Other than the aforementioned Tillman and Jackson, Izzo is bringing in a who’s who of other elite and uncommitted stars.  Spartan Nation as confirmed the following are expected to be in attendance tonight:

2017

SF Brian “Tugs” Bowen La Porte, IN  ***** (Five Star) 6’7” 175#

SF Nojel Eastern Evanston, IL **** (Four Star) 6’5” 190

2018

PF Brandon Johns East Lansing, MI **** (Four Star) 6’7” 180#

PG Foster Loyer Clarkston, MI *** (Three Star) 5’10” 150#

PG Duane Washington Jr. Grand Rapids, MI (No star ratings as of yet) 6’3” 175#

SF Gabe Brown Belleville, MI (No star ratings as of yet) 6'7 175# AAU Michigan Mustangs

2019

SF Keion Brooks Fort Wayne, IN **** (Four Star) 6’7” 180#

SG Mark “Rocket” Watts Detroit, MI *** (Three Star) 6’ 160#

PG Tyger Campbell La Porte, IN **** (Four Star) 5’10” 165#

PF Taylor Currie Clarkston, MI (No star ratings as of yet) 6’8” 205#

So while the crowd cries out to see Izzo’s next big entrance, it is the relationships that get built during an event like this that helps future teammates forge relationships.  Earlier this week Tom Izzo told me in Washington DC at Big Ten Media days that, “We have built a culture here now.  Or players are talking about it and our new ones coming in are so I think they are passing it on now.”

Izzo is right.  It starts on magical nights like tonight!
