2018 four-star wide receiver discusses his season and updates his recruitment
The Michigan State Spartans are targeting several high caliber wide receivers in the recruiting class of 2018, but none may be as dynamic as four-star wide receiver L’Christian “Blue” Smith from Huber Heights, Ohio. Smith plays for Wayne High School, a consistent powerhouse in the state of Ohio, where current Michigan State redshirt freshman quarterback Messiah deWeaver spent his senior season of high school. Smith is receiving interest from many of the top programs in the nation, and Michigan State is one school in particular that he is looking closely at.
L’Christian “Blue” Smith is a dual sport athlete (football and basketball) and has offers from top schools in both the football field and basketball court. On the first of January, Smith announced he would continue his football career rather than his basketball career in college. He discussed his decision, saying “It was a difficult decision. But I took in consideration my size and speed and felt like I could help more on the football field”
On the football field, Smith is a mismatch waiting to happen, measuring in at 6’6” and 210 pounds. Smith updated Spartan Nation on how his junior season went. “The season went well. We fell short of our goal of a state championship as we lost in regional final to Pickerington Central (home of 2018 MSU commit Xavier Henderson) and we finished with thirteen wins and one loss.”
He added, “Individually I did well. I was named conference first team, first team all state, and USA first team” Smith made significant improvements to his game this season and discussed an area of improvement he needs to work on, stating “I Improved my route running, and I need to keep improving on my separation speed.”
Smith hears from many of the top programs across the country, and he already holds a host of offers including Michigan State, University of Michigan, Ohio State, and Notre Dame, among others. There are a few schools that recruit him the hardest, “the schools that recruit me the hardest are Ohio State, Michigan State, Penn State, Rutgers, and Alabama,” Smith added.
He discussed what stood out about each of those schools.
Ohio State: the education, facilities, and the coaching staff
Michigan State: the education, Coach Dantonio, and the chance to play right away
Penn State: the coaching staff but I have not been on campus
Rutgers: my relationship with the coaches but I haven't been on campus
Alabama: also the coaching staff and I haven't been in campus
So far he plans to visit Michigan State, Penn State, and Rutgers during the spring time.
As far as a decision goes, Smith has an idea of when he would like to commit, suggesting “Yes, late September”
Scout lists L’Christian Smith a four star wide receiver, the 182nd ranked player in the class of 2018, as well as the 29th wide receiver in his class. Spartan Nation will continue to follow Smith as his decision draws closer.
