When Tom Izzo walked into the game that featured New Haven High School at Warren Cousins High School last night it was like royalty had arrived. I would guess that when a Hall of Fame and state of Michigan legend enters your gym it should.
Izzo was there to look at 2019 SF Romeo Weems. Spartan Nation has chronicled this young man often because of his rising interest from the Spartans and the rest of the nation. The 6’6” 200# Weems is a versatile big man with a major upside. He could grow into a center or perhaps stay a bigger guard and even improve into that dangerous threat forward. Forward is where he is projecting now, but the young man’s work ethic will determine that the intangibles that God controls of height and weight, wont’ dictate his ending. They are just the beginning.
Spartan Nation caught up with Romeo’s coach Tedaro France to talk about the talented young player earlier this month. “What makes Romeo a special player is his athleticism, skill set and size all mixed in with his high basketball intelligence. But what separates him from everyone else is his work ethic!”
Weems told Spartan Nation last night that, “The process is fun. I have been hearing from Michigan State, Michigan, Xavier, Oakland, U of D and Creighton.”
He said of Michigan State that, “I like Michigan State. I like the way they play and I like the players over there, Miles (Bridges) and Cassius (Winston). Coach Izzo came up tonight; I have been talking to him a lot and Coach D.J.”
So what would an offer mean to the talented Detroit big man? His big smile told the story as he said, “That would mean a lot. That would mean….a lot.”
Coach France said of his burgeoning young star, “He is a great teammate and excellent leader on and off the basketball court. His teammates gravitate towards his positive energy.” France added that, “He leads by example and has become a great vocal leader by the end of last season and over the summer. He has the unique ability to make those around him better not only by his ability but by his work ethic.”
