Coach Speak with East English Village Head Coach Juan Rickman
2017 6’3” standout Greg Elliot from Detroit’s East EnglishVillage is very much on Michigan State’s radar. Spartan Nation watched East English Village’s win over previously unbeaten Kalamazoo Central 73-63. In that game Elliot finished with 25 points and nine rebounds. Spartan Nation caught up with Elliot’s coach Juan Rickman to hear about Greg as a teammate and how he is off the floor.
“I don’t say this about our guys but he is the best player in the state,” Rickman said. “And he is even a better person.” What makes Elliot so valuable are all the different things he can do on the floor which is a talent Rickman says he learned as an underclassman. “When he was a freshmen and sophomore those intangible things were just the things he had to do to try to get minutes, we had so many other guys that would score so G just started making it a part of who he is.”
Rickman continued “So as he got better and he improved offensively he still just does all those things. He just does those things that keep you on the floor and helps your team win even if you are not scoring.”
Now as a senior, Elliot has stepped up as the leader of the team but it is something that Rickman said just happens. “That’s just G being G.” Rickman continued saying “All the guys already look to him because that’s just who he is but he is working harder at it and he is doing a good job of being a leader of this team.”
Rickman tries to teach all of his players to compete and work as hard as a player like Elliot does. “I just try to always tell them to give their best effort and to play hard and to be tough.” Coach Rickman added, “I want them all to improve their games offensively, that way you may miss a shot but keep your head up, and get it back.”
Marquette has offered Elliot, as well as Providence. Texas and Michigan State are schools that Rickman mentioned who are recruiting Elliot the hardest right now. “MSU has been coming on strong here lately and Greg is interested in them.” Rickman added, “G has a good dialoged with the coaches.” Rickman mentioned the same thing Elliot did when Spartan Nation talked to him last week about what he is looking for in a school “The vision is important to Greg, he wants to know how you see him fitting in what you are trying to do, he definitely wants to go somewhere that doesn’t just wants him but knows what they want to do with him.”
Spartan Nation will keep you updated on the recruitment of Elliot as we wait and see if he picks up the elusive Michigan State offer.
