Dantonio Adds 20th Commit for 2017 Class in Georgia CB Tre Person
Mark Dantonio is a former defensive back. Dantonio’s defensive coordinator Harlon Barnett is a former All American college cornerback and NFL star. Dantonio’s Michigan State defense is predicated on shut down corners. That is why the Spartans got some great news today when 2017 CB Tre Person flipped his commitment from his home state Georgia Southern and pledged to come north and play in the Big Ten for Dantonio.
Spartan Nation reached out early today (While Person was in East Lansing) and according to Person was the first media entity to learn of his commit and the first he spoke to. True to the character of the family he comes from, Person asked Spartan Nation NOT to report his commitment until he could communicate personally with the Georgia Southern coaches to thank them. Spartan Nation honored Person’ request and broke the story only after he had spoken to the coaches at Georgia Southern and called us.
Person communicated to Georgia Southern that Michigan State “Was a better fit and that it is a better move for (his) future as far as education and football.”
Person told Spartan Nation of his commitment that, “I have never seen a weight room like that. It was crazy and I was glad to see that because I am going to need that. The uniforms and all of it, but that wasn’t he reason I committed. It all came down to the people. Do I want to surround myself with these kinds of people? Are these kinds of people that I want to be around and the clear answer was yes.”
Person fell in love with East Lansing this weekend while here for his official visit. Now back in Georgia he told us of his visit that, “It was people. The people there. From the time I got there until the time we left they treated us like family. Coach Dantonio he has a great staff and that is the staff I want to be a part of. I am really excited. The education is a big part as well. That degree (From Michigan State) carries so much weight. I am going to be the first member of my family to actually get a college degree and I have a little brother that looks up to everything I do and I want to see me put importance on a degree and me getting one.”
The 6’0”, 165-pound corner out of Westlake High School in Atlanta, GA told Spartan Nation he last week that he runs a 4.45 40-yard dash. He picked up his offer from Michigan State on January 12th, and became a Spartan today. It was a quick 10 day turnaround.
He told Spartan Nation prior to his official visit this weekend what he liked about the Spartans. “Michigan State is really known for their defense, so that’s what really attracts me to Michigan State, it’s just not the name,” He added, “The physicalness of the defense – that’s what I’m looking forward to.”
So how does Person describe his style as a press shut down corner? “I’m real aggressive; I like to use my aggression a lot. I encourage you to go watch my film – it speaks for itself,” said Person. “If you go watch my film, you’ll see what I like to do – I love to make plays.”
Scout national recruiting analyst Chad Simmons told me, “Trey first of all is very good athlete. I first saw him play live early in the 2016 season. He has good links can run and make plays. He can get those interceptions and touchdowns. I think has to get bigger and stronger so he can perform in coming up against the run and in one on one situation. He has great potential and athleticism.”
Person is the 20th public commit to Mark Dantonio and the Spartans for the 2017 class. The Spartans have two other pledges that have not as of yet been made public. While Spartan Nation does not normally value (SVC) Silent Verbal Commits, in both cases the reasons are not because of players seeking attention. One of the commits should make it know publicly early this coming week.
With the two as of yet not publicly acknowledged commitments the Spartans have 22 players pledged for the 2017 class. Michigan State would take 25 players in the class as Spartan Nation has been reporting for months.
