Michigan State and Coach Mark Dantonio receive gray shirt commitment from 2017 Michigan wide receiver Jahz Watts

2017 Beleville, Michigan athlete Jahz Watts has committed to Michigan State (MSU) on a gray shirt scholarship offer. The 6’2”, 190 pound versatile athlete officially visited MSU this weekend and was offered a gray shirt scholarship at the wide receiver position. He committed to the staff on spot. Spartan Nation was the first to learn of his commitment and we spoke with Watts shortly after he became a Spartan!

The under-the-radar recruit has been interested in MSU since he was little. He also has been recruited by the staff at MSU for over a year. When he was given opportunity to play for the Spartans, Watts knew he had to take it. “This is the best program in the nation to produce great men and players! And they made me feel very welcomed on my visits,” he said.

“I’m truly honored. I hope I'm a good addition as a WR here,” Watts told Spartan Nation, “It feels like a dream come true! It's amazing to be apart this family and I know we'll exceed all expectations.”

As a gray shirt commitment, Watts will go to class for the first semester as part-time students at MSU, without starting his eligibility clock. Then he will begin as full-time students on scholarship after. Then he will have five years to play four seasons, with the ability to redshirt at some point. Most recently kicker Matthew Coghlin, a 2016 Spartan signee, came to MSU as a gray shirt.

When asked what he can bring to the Michigan State football program, Watts explained, “my will to work and competitive nature to push my teammates.” Also, he has one goal in mind for his tenure as a Spartan. “I want to help bring the team championships in any way I can!”

Concluding our talk, Jahz exclaimed, “I can't wait to finally get on campus for good. Go Green!”

Michigan State is known for their discovery of “diamond in the rough” recruits, where the Spartans land a recruit with little or no offers, only to have a brilliant career as a Spartan and make the NFL. Le’Veon Bell, Darqueze Dennard, Trae Waynes, and Jack Conklin are all examples of those recruits, and Jahz Watts has the opportunity to prove to be next in line. Remember to keep up with Spartan Nation for all recruiting news for Signing Day 2017.
