On Presidents’ Day, many of the top athletes in the midwest gathered to compete in Indiana at the “Best of the Midwest” camp. 2018 four-star Spartan commit Joseph Scates led the group of wide receivers at the event, but one standout at the position was 2019 Belleville, Michigan four-star Julian Barnett. Julian stood out at both the wide receiver and defensive back positions and made some memorable plays. Spartan Nation caught up with the 6’2”, 180 pound wide receiver to discuss his performance and update his recruitment.
It’s no secret that Julian will be one of the most sought after 2019 recruits at his position. His performance at the Best of the Midwest camp backs up that statement. He had the attention of all scouts and recruiting analysts in attendance with his blazing speed, crisp routes, and soft hands. He went over his experience at the camp. “The camp was fun. I had a great time and learned a few things I didn't know previously.” One area of the event that stood out to Julian the most, was the 1on1’s. “The outstanding part of the camp was 1on1’s. I didn't get enough reps because they were calling names out off a list, but I did a great job!”
The most noteworthy aspect of his performance was Julian’s blazing 4.41 forty yard dash time. Of course, speed is a very important trait for the wide receiver position, but Julian’s exceptional speed gives him an edge on the competition.
“My speed allows me to get past defenders. Also my body control, good feet, and my hands have gotten better which allows me to succeed as a receiver,” Julian commented on his forty yard dash time.
On the recruiting front, Julian already holds a handful of offers, including Kentucky, Missouri, Iowa State, and others. One program that stands out to Julian is Michigan State. “I used to hear from [Michigan] State a lot but not as much anymore,” he commented. He went on to explain his interest in the Spartans, as he stated “It would be nice to start hearing from them more. Actually, growing up i was always a LSU fan, but Michigan State is cool.”
As far as if any schools stand out to the four-star wide receiver early on, Julian described “No schools stand out really. As I get older and come closer to making a decision, I will look into some schools more closely.” Right now, his recruitment is wide open and currently does not have any plans for visits.
Scout rates Julian Barnett a four-star wide receiver in the class of 2019. He figures to be one of he Michigan State Spartans’ top options at the position in his cycle. Spartan nation will stay in touch with Julian as he works towards more offers and comes closer to a decision.
