19 OH WR/DB Has “Great Visit” to MSU Today

Michigan State opened spring football today and while the focus on the field is on 2017, recruiting keeps marching on.  With a bevy of 18, 19 and 20 players taking tours and watching practice it was a big day for the Green and White.

One of the players in East Lansing is a super athlete from Columbus, OH.  Cameron "CAM" Phillips is a 2019 WR/DB from Westerville Central hails from Columbus, but was quick to point out to Spartan Nation when we spoke moments ago as he drives home, “I am not a Buckeye guy.”

At 6’1” and 179 pounds Phillips talked about his visit.  “This was my second time on campus.  I was on campus for a game versus Northwestern last year.  I didn’t tour around then like I did today.  It was great to see all the facilities.”

He expanded on his thoughts of the visit adding, “It was real nice.  The energy was wild and the whole environment is wild pretty sweet.  I love the intensity and competition on the field.”

One way to judge a young man’s visit is to find out who he spends time with.  This alone tells a lot about what the Spartans think of Phillips.  He told us he spent time with, “Coach Tressel the linebacker coach, Coach Barnett the defensive coordinator, the wide receiver coach Terrene Samuel and the head coach Mark Dantonio.”

So what did he think of the Michigan State head man?  “He is really competitive and loves to win.  He cares about your future and not just your football future.  He talks about school and life out of school and what are your goals and everything around those.  He impressed me.”

So was there a highlight to his visit today?  “We watched practice after the tour.  It was very fast paced and everything around it is as well.  They go full speed and people are having fun and there is a lot of competition which I like.”

So did the staff let the young Phillips know where they were thinking about using him should he become a Spartan?  “They say they’ll move me around.  They usually move guys around and they are most interested in my intensity and competitive nature.”

For Phillips, not all of his eggs are in the Michigan State basket.  He talked about some other schools that he is talking to as well.  “Illinois I haven’t visited yet, but I will be there March 4 and I like their coaching staff a lot.”

While Illinois is the only other Big Ten School, two others are on his radar.  “Toledo, I talked to them three weeks ago on the phone and we haven’t set a date but I am going to visit for a spring practice.”

He also is getting some attention from former Michigan State DC Pat Narduzzi who now leads Pittsburgh.  Phillips said, “Pitt is another.  I haven’t visited there, I do not know much about them, but I will visit this spring for sure.”

So while Phillips is very young he is starting to see the plan for his recruitment heat up. I asked if he had any plans for this summer that relate to the Spartans and he told me, “I plan on coming up there for camp.”  So is East Lansing a place he thinks he could call home?  He didn’t hesitate to say, “Yes it is.”

While he does not have an offer yet, Phillips is a rising star and you can keep it tuned to Spartan Nation for the latest on his recruitment.
