2018 Ohio safety, Jeremiah Wood, talks to Spartan Nation about his visit to Michigan State, his interest, and more!

A 3-star safety recruit from the Class of 2018 made his third trip to East Lansing at the end of January for the Michigan State/Michigan basketball game.  He’s already received eight offers from all around the country – Cincinnati, Iowa State, Kentucky, Ball State, Eastern Kentucky, Miami (OH), Toledo and Western Michigan.  But he’s also drawn interest from four Big Ten schools – Indiana, Northwestern, Ohio State and…Michigan State.  From Pickerington, OH, let’s meet Jeremiah Wood.

“It would mean a lot, especially being my first Big Ten offer,” Wood told Spartan Nation of what a scholarship from Michigan State would mean to him.  “Any offer would mean a lot, but this one would mean a lot because it would be my first Big Ten and it’s a good school.  Even though they didn’t have the year they wanted to, they’re known for being good in football.”

Wood, a 6’0”, 205-pound junior at Pickerington High School Central, says he’s mostly heard from Co-Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers Coach, Mike Tressel, and Co-Defensive Coordinator/DB’s Coach, Harlon Barnett.  When he was in East Lansing a few weeks ago, though, there really wasn’t any talk of a potential offer.

“When I went up there, they were just saying to be patient and stay with them and it’s gonna come,” Jeremiah explained.

Not only is he waiting on the offer from the Spartans, but he’s waiting on one from Indiana, as well.

“I like Indiana,” Jeremiah said.  “One of my friends just committed there.  That’s another Big Ten school – they’re known for being good.”

But one school he already has an offer from is Kentucky.

“I like Kentucky a lot, too,” he admitted.  “They’re in the SEC, so they play a lot of big schools and big talent.  They just had a good year, so hopefully they’ll have another good year.  When I went down there, it was exciting.”

The waiting game isn’t always the easiest for recruits, especially when they’re looking forward to offers from specific schools.  But Wood is trying to enjoy the ride.

“It’s definitely been fun.  Just going out to all the schools and meeting everybody and seeing what each school has to offer,” he admitted.  “It’s fun getting to go out of town every weekend with my parents.  It’s definitely been fun.”

On the field, Jeremiah sees similarities between his game and the one belonging to one of the premier strong safeties in the NFL, Kam Chancellor.

“He can still cover and he comes up and makes big hits and can play in the box.  He’s probably one of my favorite players in the NFL,” Wood said.

Regardless of his skill on the football field, who Jeremiah Wood is off the field is even more impressive.  He has a calm demeanor; he’s friendly and open.  Those qualities are born and bred from his family.

“I have a brother and two sisters.  My parents are together.  They just raised me to try to be the best I could be, and everyday try to work to be a better person.  Whether that’s in football or anything, just try to become a better person everyday,” Jeremiah explained.

Jeremiah Wood would be a welcomed addition to any team, but you can tell an offer from Michigan State would be something special for him.  Only time will tell when/if that offer will come through from the Spartans, but Jeremiah is a kid we will certainly keep an eye on in the coming months.
