#1 Kansas pulls away at the end to defeat #9 Michigan State 90-70 in the Round of 32

#9 Michigan State fell to #1 Kansas 90-70 in the second round of the 2017 NCAA Tournament in Tulsa, OK.

The Jayhwaks advance to the Sweet 16 for the second straight year, where they will meet #4 Purdue in Kansas City on Thursday.

The lead toggled back and forth for the first 10+ minutes of the first half – Michigan State led by as many as three points, Kansas led by as many as five.

With the Spartans leading 25-23, the Jayhawks rattled off a 13-2 run to take a 36-27 lead.  But MSU finished the first half on a mini 6-0 run of its own, and trailed KU 40-35 at the break.

The Spartans trailed the entire second half.  However, Michigan State was able to cut the Kansas lead to just one - trailing 50-42 at the 16:30 mark of the second half, MSU went on an 11-4 run, to make it 54-53.  But that was as close as the Spartans would get for the remainder of the game.

From that moment, Kansas pulled away, closing the final 12 minutes of the game on a 36-17 run.

Michigan State was led by an outstanding game from Miles Bridges – 22 points and 8 rebounds.  Bridges was forced to leave the game in the first half after taking an elbow to the hip, but he only missed about five minutes of game play, and was the clear on-court leader for the Spartans all night long.  Nick Ward had 13 points and 4 boards, Josh Langford added 10 points, and Matt McQuaid added nine points on 3-7 shooting from behind the arc off the bench for MSU.

Kansas had four scorers in double figures, led by freshman Josh Jackson’s 23 points.  Big 12 Player of the Year, and Naismith Award finalist, Frank Mason III, had 20 points, Devonte’ Graham had 18, and Landen Lucas added a double-double, 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Michigan State finishes the season at 20-15 overall, but reached the NCAA Tournament for the 20th straight year.
