Hondo, you seem to really like our 18 QB Theo Day a lot.  Do you think a QB can have a big impact on recruiting like Messiah deWeaver did?  Kelly B.

I don’t think it is fair to ask any player to be the next whoever.  For example, Miles Bridges is great, but I have heard people talk about Magic coming back and that he can be Magic.  Give me a break.  You have to enjoy athletes just like people, as individuals.  I really like Day.  I like his style and work ethic and he does have a great worth ethic.  Those are all great qualities.

Hondo, I know that the media isn’t allowed into practice, but can you tell me a player on each side of the ball that you hear are having a good spring?  Thanks for trying.  Mike Carn

I want to make this clear; I have not been there.  However, universally I can give you some thoughts that I have heard from several folks who have been.  According to EVERYONE that I have spoken to there is no QB battle.  That is not a surprise.  Brian Lewerke, according to those there, has been great.  Cole Chewins has really come along and is improving but solid. Brian Allen has been dominant and Madre London has run very well.  On defense I have two names several have mentioned.  With a depleted DE, RS sophomore Kenny Willekes has been impressive as well as Dillon Alexander a junior DE.  With a depleted group at DE those two according to everyone have looked very good.  Both Willekes and Alexander are walk-ons and several have mentioned one OR both have been awarded scholarships.  No one from MSU will confirm this because of Dantonio's lock down.  Tyriq Thompson is a player I have been told by multiple people is progressing very nicely as well.  He is a very athletic player, but also very smart and Josiah Scott is the real deal, a true freshman.  Several folks have ranted about his ability to make plays.

Hondo, I saw that Malik Vann is coming for the spring game and is making his choice in June.  That can’t be bad for MSU can it?  Thanks for all you do.  I am loving all of the expanded coverage of the Spartans and still great recruiting information.  T. Hayes

It can’t be a bad thing.  MSU sees him as a top tier and high priority player, so his presence at the spring game is big for them.  MSU has put a lot of time and effort into landing him and he likes MSU.  At that level of player just liking a school doesn’t mean that is all it takes.  You can like a lot of different schools, but the Spartans are CLEARLY in the hunt on him and have a good shot.

Hondo, can you tell Coach D that Jesus says he should not have co-coordinators?  He is a man of faith so maybe he will listen lol. "No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon."  Matt. 6:24.  There needs to be a clear chain of command.  Mark

I think he would tell you that they don’t have two masters, he is the boss, but I get your point.  That is more in name than anything.  Dave Warner is clearly your OC and Harlon Barnett is your DC.

Hondo do you have any idea why they cancelled the scrimmage on Saturday?  Thanks, Larry in Manton

They didn’t.  Early Friday afternoon when they saw how gorgeous the weather was they sent out a text to players that they were actually going to scrimmage that day instead.  Because of missing the bowl game, they started spring early this year and they have been indoors a lot.  So they did scrimmage on Friday and practiced on Saturday.

Are you seeing any parallels between where the basketball program was a few years ago and what the football program is going through now?  It's no secret that during that time, Tom Izzo recruited a lot of kids that didn't fit the mold of the type of player that can handle his style of coaching and things began to spiral out of control.  To the point where it was obvious to many that Izzo had lost some love for coaching.  Then, along came Tum (side note, not enough people give Tum credit for what his leadership and attitude have done to turn this program around) and Izzo realized that a good group of kids will be better than what he had.  Andrew Lehmann, Indianapolis

Respectfully, I would say it started the year before Tum got here, but your point is noted.  I would say this.  Izzo’s program struggled as mentioned and some players did struggle with his style.  I would say MSU struggled because Coach D changed as far as handling players and that caused his issues.  They are working hard to fix it and just like Coach Izzo got the program back on solid footing, so we can expect the same of Dantonio.

Hondo, we know Thiyo Lukusa and Jon Reschke are gone and the three players are suspended.  Do you know if there has been any other attrition?  I guess are any other players gone?  Thanks Mike in Traverse City

Yes there are.  Since it has not been made public I won’t name them.  I will ask Mark Dantonio about them on Saturday.

Hondo, I am curious about spring ball.  Any surprise name that you are hearing getting some reps that maybe people wouldn’t have considered?  Tammy Miller

Hi Tammy, one name that would surprise some people is Colar Kuhns.  He is a junior walk-on QB who has played a lot and frankly impressed some people with his level of preparation and execution.  Let’s make it clear that there is no QB controversy, but you asked for a surprise name getting reps.  Also I am not there, but I have had Kuhns mentioned to me several times.

Hondo, I had read people saying that Mark Dantonio had banned parents of current players from practice.  Do you know if that has continued all spring?  Thanks Pete M.

The parents have been allowed in the last two weeks.

Hondo, no offense, but I am not looking for information as to what you personally think.  Do you have a feel from inside the University if they expect Curtis Blackwell to return?  Thanks  J. Jackson

I think it is critical to remind you that people are innocent until proven guilty.  That said, this is not my opinion, but I have been told by TWO MSU officials that they do not expect Curtis to return to MSU no matter what happens.  Please understand I am only disseminating to you what I was told by TWO MSU officials.  I am not claiming that as fact, simply what I have been told.

Hondo any names on who you think will take Curtis Blackwell’s job should he not return?  Kyle J.

Several people at Michigan State including some in the administration have told me that Sheldon White is taking that role over.  In fact one person asked me what I personally thought of him.  He is a former NFL GM and comes with a very well respected background as it pertains to football player personnel.  He is a good man and a solid person.  Who knows if he stays in that job, but as long as he does it, it is a good thing.
