Nyquee Hawkins, a 2019 DB with over a dozen offers, discusses his visit to MSU and offer and updates his recruitment

This past weekend, Michigan State hosted one of the most heavily recruited athletes in the nation right now, Nyquee Hawkins. The 6’0”, 180 pound sophomore is considered a “lockdown defensive back” for Orange High School in Orange, New Jersey. He has received offers from over a dozen schools already, including Penn State, Michigan, North Carolina, Pittsburg, and most recently Michigan State. Spartan Nation caught up with Hawkins to go over his recent visit and talk about his recent offer from the Spartans.

Hawkins will be one of the top ranked recruits in his class when it's all said and done. He has been on the radar of schools since eighth grade, and his ability is clear. Hawkins is athletic, has loose hips to allow him to change direction, has plus stop-start ability and he he shows closing speed. Michigan State became the 14th school to recognize that and extend an offer, and it came as a big one to the budding star. “Coach Snyder offered me while I was on my unofficial visit. Its cool that they recognized my ability, having such an impressive history. With Coach Dantonio winning three Big Ten championship in six years proves that,” he spoke of his offer.

Hawkins has taken notice of the Spartans’ success with defensive backs under Coach Dantonio. Darqueze Dennard, of the Cincinnati Bengals, and Trae Waynes, of the Minnesota Vikings, were both first round draft picks and have contributed greatly to their respected defenses. “Producing such great NFL defensive backs means the staff knows what they are doing and this could be a place for me to succeed at,” he spoke of the NFL production.

His visit to Michigan State came as sort of an unexpected surprise while on a trip to visit both in- state schools. “My visit was great and I love the facilities,” Hawkins said “I love how everything is in the same place which makes it super convenient!”

Obviously, it is extremely early in the 2019 recruit’s recruitment but the Spartans left a great early impression. “The Michigan State offer is great. I love the Big Ten and since I'm only a 10th grader, I still have a lot of time to get to know the coaches there,” he explained. Additionally, Hawkins is looking forward to the future of his recruitment, “I’m excited for what that future of my recruitment with the Spartans holds,” he added.

It has already been a busy spring for Hawkins, having visited many schools in the past few weeks. After visiting Michigan State and Michigan this weekend and Maryland on Monday, he also plans to be in attendance of Penn State’s Spring Game this upcoming weekend.

Scout does not yet rate Nyquee Hawkins, although he figures to be one of the most highly recruited athletes in the class of 2019.
