Answering your Michigan State Football Questions and Emails…

Hondo, who are the top two or three recruits that you think we have the best chance at landing?  Thanks, Mark H.

Great question.  I think (OH S) Michael Dowell, (MI CB) Davion Williams, and (OH LB) Jeslord Boateng are the three top guys that I think are very strong Michigan State leans.Jeslord BoatengVerified accountProtected Tweets Jeslord BoatengVerified accountProtected Tweets

Hondo, I remember a few years ago that you interviewed a NFL GM that talked about reviewing your staff.  I believe if my memory is correct that he told you if others aren’t coming after your staff, why do you keep them?  Should it tell us that Mark Dantonio’s staff is the problem when only NMU wanted one of our coaches and no one else did?  Kyle H.

That story about the NFL GM is correct, but you would be mistaken to think that there weren’t others that had interest this season.  I know of one that was wanted by an SEC program (a good one) that didn’t think leaving Coach D after a bad year was fair to Dantonio.   Coach Dantonio’s loyalty to him was reciprocated.

Hondo, do you know who the Eagles Council members are and what are your thoughts on their leadership?  Bryan A.

In no particular order they are:

  1. Byron Bullough

  2. Gerald Holmes

  3. Brian Allen

  4. Chris Frey, Jr.

  5. Andrew Dowell

  6. Grayson Miller

  7. Joe Bachie

  8. Cole Chewins

  9. Raequan Williams

  10. Brian Lewerke

  11. Matt Sokol

  12. Matt Morrissey

All of those young men are solid folks.  They are a very good group of players who have the respect on the field, off the field, and in the classroom.  There is no doubt that can lead, but they will have to trusted  to do so.

Hondo, is it fair to say the sky is falling when kids like Malik Vann & Dallas Gant call MSU a dream school or one they always wanted to go to and they go elsewhere?  Chris Mulvaney

Sky is falling?  Of course not.  Michigan State did so many amazing things prior to the Rose Bowl with undervalued and highly motivated players that came here.  Vann and Gant are two great kids and super players.  I have spoken with both and I think they will have great careers.  Should it hurt?  Yes, but far from the sky is falling.

Hondo, I am a little confused.  Blaine Scott, the offensive tackle from Ohio, used to be a kid that Michigan State made a living with.  Kid has been here a million times and goes to Ole Miss.  What am I missing?  Thanks Carl M.

You are not missing anything; he chose Ole Miss.  Did you think that kids like him always picked Michigan State?  They didn’t.  I admit this stings a little bit, but I wouldn't push the panic button now.

Hondo, when you look at the roster next year is there a place that you think is not getting the respect it should for our starters?  Thanks Kyle Smith

I think the two starting DT’s in Mike Panasiuk and Raequan Williams are extremely undervalued.  MSU is not deep at all on the DL, but those two are very good.

Hondo, I really like the RB out of Ohio named Tavion Thomas.  Do you have an update on him?  Of all the kids I have seen on film I really want him.  You interviewed him prior so I am hopeful.  Thank you. Peter

He did not place MSU in his top ten has he narrowed his choices back on May 1.

Hondo, I know that you have had a lot of praise for Lewerke since he was in high school.  Now that he is here and has the program in his hands how good can he be?  Is he an NFL player?  Jenifer M.

He is an NFL player.  He is a combination of Brian Hoyer, Kirk Cousins, and Connor Cook.  He is super mobile, very accurate, and a super leader on and off the field.  He has the chance to be very special, but remember that a QB is only one of eleven.

Hondo, we know the players for the 2017 class that enrolled early.  Of those who did not, any prediction on who could have the biggest impact?  Thanks, Ken Hurst

Wide receiver Cody White is a player I expect to have a big impact on the team.

Hondo, would you happen to have any thoughts on Jalen Mayfield the four star offensive lineman from Michigan and where he will go to play football?  I know he is a big Michigan State fan.  Do you think the Spartans are in the lead for him?  To me he is the top prospect that we have to get this year.  Thanks for all you do.  Chris W.

I do not think Michigan State is in the driver’s seat for this young man.  Yes, he is a Michigan State fan, but being a fan doesn’t necessarily make it the right fit.
