Answering your Michigan State Football Questions and Emails…

Hondo, I have heard you really praise Justin Layne and Josiah Scott as our “Undervalued” corners next year and our starters. Vayante Copeland to me has to be a starter doesn’t he?  Thanks.  Nick M.

I have previously reported Vayante Copeland “Is not with the team” and according to the sources that come from the team, the football staff, and those in the athletic department that told me that, that has not changed.  I 100% stand behind that report.

Hondo, I have loved the articles with the current players lately.  Seems like we have some really super kids.  Why are we not getting more coverage on the good kids like you seem to be doing?  Thanks, Chris Martin

If MSU does not make people available to us it is hard to tell their story.  MSU is currently in a bunker mentality and I expect the bunker to get deeper and wider over the next couple of weeks.  If you do not have access to those players and (the OVERWHELMING majority are great) the ability to tell their story, you can’t.  Bear Bryant at Alabama told his beat reporters that there would be an Alabama story every day in the media and he made it readily possible to do that.  MSU is sitting on those good stories and it doesn’t make a lot of sense.  You can’t let 15% of the players take 95% of the media coverage.  It isn’t fair to the kids, the program or the fans.

Hondo, when John L. Smith was here we recruited a lot of junior college players.  Coach D would occasionally take one, but said he was not comfortable with a lot of them.  I see that you reported we recently offered a couple of them.  Is that a reason to panic?  Concern?  He didn’t seem too excited about it previously and now they seem to be going after more.  Joel R.

Iowa Western offensive lineman Anthony McKinney and Josh Knipfel have both picked up MSU offers.  MSU is also in on others. I do not think it is a reason to panic as of yet. If you are taking several, you should panic.  If you are taking one or two to fill a need, I love it.  Alabama and Oklahoma do.  You don’t want a team to live on them like MSU needed to do with JLS, but if you are going to go after them, it is better to get in on them early like MSU is now rather than trying to get in late as has happened in the past.

Hondo, you have not wanted to answer this question previously, but usually coming out of spring you nail the captains every year.  Can you give a prediction now?  Thanks, Jason in Granger, Indiana

MSU has four captains.  They usually go with three and use a rotating fourth one.  In my opinion after talking to multiple players and those in the program, the choices will come from Chris Frey, Jr., Brian Allen, Gerald Holmes, and Brian Lewerke.  All four men are well respected, all four are super on and off the field, and all four would be great choices.  You can’t go wrong with any of them.

Hondo, can you name two guys that were on the roster in 2016 that didn’t contribute a lot, that you expect to really take off this year?  Thank, Sean Thelen

Sure I can.  OL Luke Campbell is a big kid, super athletic, and a super person.  He is going to be a kid that people are talking about as the season progresses.  Another is S David Dowell.  He is a super young man with great skills.  Not sure he will start, but he will play a lot and push for a starting role.  I look for big things from him in 2017.

Hondo, I am a real big fan of Kaleel Gains out of Florida.  What do you see him doing for us in 2017?  Coming into his third year I think he could be special.  Thanks Keri in Dade County

Kaleel is a very nice young man.  I like his game as well.  He has great skills and like I already said he is a really good guy.  That said I do not expect Kaleel to contribute in 2017.

Hondo, what do you think of all the MSU offers coming down south?  Have we switched away from our Michigan and the Midwest first philosophy?  Thank you for all you do.  Kyle J.

No, they have not, but they certainly are attempting to expand their footprint.
