Michigan State Football Loses 2nd Player in Two Days!
Michigan State S Kenney Lyke confirmed to ESPN tonight that he is leaving the program. According to the report, courtesy of my good friend Dan Murphy, Lyke said, “…that he planned to transfer to Mississippi Delta Community College in hopes of eventually landing at an SEC school in the future.”
Murphy’s report also said that Lyke gave for his reason, “…he is leaving the team because he came up one credit shy of his required course load this spring. The Illinois native said he plans to attend the junior college for one semester before finding a new home.”
Spartan Nation was aware of Lyke’s status prior to this announcement and said so in previous reports when we stated, “We do not expect him to contribute in 2017.” FIND PROOF HERE.
On Friday, DB Kaleel Gaines was announced as leaving as well. Thiyo Lukusa and Jon Reschke have already left along with two early NFL Draft enrollees. In addition to the above stated issues, there are currently three suspended players that regardless of criminal charges being pressed or not that are not expected to return. Dantonio has already acknowledged other players being, "Red Locked" which is not being with the team in a suspended type status.
Spartan Nation was made aware from those inside the University on Tuesday May 23, 2017, that there are several players who are allegedly ineligible academically for the 2017 season already and others that are requiring “Significant summer school success” in order to be eligible. Lyke's comment to ESPN about his grades confirms at least in part what we were told on May 23.
Spartan Nation was requested by a member of the Michigan State athletic department to wait until Tuesday May 30th to ask for a comment from Dantonio who would be returning from a nearly two week vacation. We sought comment from Dantonio on that information. We honored that request and reached out early Tuesday May 30th as we were asked.
On Tuesday afternoon the Michigan State football sports information director Ben Phlegar responded to Spartan Nation. Here is his emailed answer in its entirety:
“Hondo, We do not have any status updates on the roster to announce at this time. Thanks, Ben”
I followed that email up with a call to Phlegar who did not wish to discuss the matter anymore.
According to MULTIPLE members of the board of trustees and the athletic department staff, Mark Dantonio has been told to appear in front of the Board on Monday at noon. His appearance has already been confirmed by the University. Although this is a closed board meeting, Spartan Nation and multiple media outlets plan on showing up at the meeting.
